Cooper On Beckett's Return

11.Jun.07 by astrumporta | Category News |

Finally breaking his silence on the issue, today on SCI FI Wire Stargate Executive Producer Robert C. Cooper spoke of Carson Beckett’s demise in Season 3 and his possible return in Season 4:

“Essentially we write into the [stories] what we think works well,” executive producer Robert C. Cooper said in an interview on the show’s set in Vancouver, Canada, over the weekend. “On the other hand, we know what the fans enjoy, and we want to keep the fans happy. For example, we killed off [Beckett] at the end of season three. The fans were very vocal about his departure, and we understood that he meant a lot to them. We’re working on a storyline that may see him return temporarily. If it works out creatively””if what the fans like creatively and what we like creatively syncs up””that’s great.”

It is gratifying to see RCC acknowledge fan outrage to Carson being written out, which happened while he and Brad Wright were the show-runners. Then again, it’s not quite logical for him say they want to keep fans happy when he and Wright were the ones who decided killing Carson was a good idea. Perhaps he’s admitting he hadn’t actually known Carson “meant a lot to fans,” which would be a pity if true.

It is also disturbing to see RCC say Carson “may return” in spite of fans being assured by Joe Mallozzi that Carson’s return is a done deal. UPDATE: Joe has confirmed for us that Carson is returning for certain. He is writing the first of the two-parter himself, right now!

You can read the entire story of Beckett’s possible return at SCI FI Wire, including a quote from David Hewlett.

he also uses the word ‘temporarily’ when talking about his return….we want more than that! i guess its something though…for now

Thanks guys for keeping us in the picture. I check this site daily after finding it on google back in February when Sunday aired in the u.k. Recently met Paul at the London Expo and he is so genuinely appreciative of our efforts that this makes me even more determined to do all I can to see him back on Atlantis.

I didn’t realize until they axed Carson how much I liked his character. I don’t understand why they did it. It makes no sense. And they are trying to bring him back temporarily? So they’re going to give me a little more of him and let him go again? Does that make more sense? Does anyone know if McGillion is going to be on another series or of any upcoming movies he will be in?
The writers have proven their inability to gage what we-the fans-would want to see-It’s Outrageous.

Thanks very much for that news SCB. :)

If they seriously didn’t grasp how much the fans loved Beckett I don’t know WHAT galaxy they were in. Also - why would they have given a ‘regular’ cast spot to someone they didn’t think the fans liked that much? Geeeessss! *slaps forehead*

On the plus side it’s great to know Joe is working on the script though. :) Carson Beckett full time season 5!!!

  5. Comment by Linda Shadle | 13.Jun.07 @ 5:23 pm

Geeze! So NOW Cooper is saying Carson MIGHR be back! How……..COMFORTING! Obviously the left hand DOESN’T know what the right hand is doing…..or saying! And I’m NOT going to stand for this wishy washy crap from Cooper! Either we get Carson AND Paul back….PERMANENTLY….or I NEVER watch another episode despite tje fact I love Radek and John and like Rodney!

Obviously Cooper was on something when they made the idiotic decision to off Carson! There was NO logic in it! And they obviously DON’T know or understand the fan base if he can say what he just did with a straight face! Or WAS it straight?

Poor Paul! I know I wouldn’t want to be hanging on a line waiting for MAYBE a one-shot! They offered the man a FIVE YEAR CONTRACT AND made him a regular on the show! For what? Jason Momoa, who hadn’t even been ON the show got a starring part AND he’s STILL there! I could do witout Ronon and wouldn’t miss him if he got offed. But Carson Beckett was something and someONE special! His last episode ‘Sunday’ showed just what he was made of! The WAY he died was about the most ridibulous demise I have EVER seen on ANY TV sgow! Ridiculous and NOT heroic! It was totally meaningless in fact! Sorry Paul!

I have hopes that Mallozzi WILL keep his promise and, if the show gets renewed for Season Five, that we see that lovely little Scottish doc back in the flesh and back in action!

Well, I just watched the episode and I was just crushed. I just loved Carson. He was one of my favorite characters. What is it with these producers of the SG shows and offing the good doctors? Flashes of the Six Million Dollar Man and the Bionic Woman flashed before my eyes………..copying storylines. I know, I just dated myself. Sigh…………I certainly hope that, let’s think the glass half full, they think of some believable and ‘original’ way to bring Carson back………otherwise, I’m going to think that the producers are trying to kill this show off, too………….

  7. Comment by John C. | 14.Jun.07 @ 11:24 am

The powers that be at Stargate:Atlantis keep using
the quote “Anything is possible in science fiction and
no one really dies ” Fine then if this is what Cooper and
Mallozzi honestly think then the good Dr. Beckett will
be back as stated. If they can bring back a bad guy
like Nirrti to accomodate the soon to be released direct
to DVD Stargate films they can sure as heck bring back
    Beckett..for crying out loud !

  8. Comment by Kat | 14.Jun.07 @ 3:12 pm

How can you kill Carson and leave him dead when there is so much technology to bring him back?! He is a very important part of this cast!! There were too many other people that would have been more logical to kill off…

  9. Comment by Sue | 15.Jun.07 @ 8:11 am

The shows execs’ promise of bringing back Carson don’t comfort me. A ‘temporary’ resurrection is NOT what we’re asking for. I can’t believe people actually thought this would be a good idea. Sure, boost ratings for one show and then ensure the show’s demise by killing a fan favorite!!! This seems to be disturbing trend in popular sci-fi shows — to take the heart and soul out of them! I am mystified as to the motivation. Anyway, just bring Carson back, okay? Permanently! Thanks ….

  10. Comment by Suzanne | 15.Jun.07 @ 10:58 am

I hope that we get Dr. Beckett back! I miss him already. He lent a special quality to the cast. Among all the horrors that they faced, he was one that let you know what it was to be a real person in the midst of unsought for action. He showed courage and manners, not a usual combination, which made him all the more desirable as a teammate on foreign soil.

  11. Comment by Gabe | 15.Jun.07 @ 1:02 pm

I have been thinking about the episode Sunday, that aired two weeks ago. I gotta say Carso is my favorite character and I find it hard to watch the show that I have grown to love without him. Perhaps the folks in charge thought they could pull off the same success that SG-! had when they killed off their very own doctor. Aside from the fact that I found the repeat of a closely related series episode tacky, obviously the powers that be have been paying very little attention to what their fan base likes and doesn’t like.

On the other hand, the people who don’t like this decision are making a huge stink about the poor choice in the episode. By doing this we are creating a buzz for a show that does not consider their viewers. I don’t know about anyone else, but I am going to ignore the show and check weekly on scifi.com to see if Becket is coming back. I will resume watching when he is.

Don’t get me wrong, I like the rest of the cast and the show, I just hate when there is no consideration for the viewers. Thats just my opinion though. Hopefully we will see Carson back.

  12. Comment by Richard Stewart | 15.Jun.07 @ 4:24 pm

I’ve been working out a story line to get Carson Beckett back. How do I communicate my idea with the right person? I don’t want credit; I just think we need a cool plot twist to bring him back; something the producers would go for.

  13. Comment by Kaytee C. | 15.Jun.07 @ 6:37 pm

I cried my eyes out last night when I actually was back home to watch the taped episode. Beckett was always my favourite character (alongside John of course). Although I am outraged that they would kill off any character seemingly without plot need, I am glad that they allowed him to go nobly.
Now,… it’s time to bring him back. I agree with Gabe.

  14. Comment by Annie | 17.Jun.07 @ 2:29 am

Arrogance is going to be the death of this show. They took a gamble and killed a much loved character (though why they thought that this might help the ratings is a bit beyond me) the gamble hasn’t paid off. The fans are in uproar over this, people are genuinely angry, and instead of recognising this, holding their hands up and saying okay we made a mistake, we’ll fix it, they are treating the viewers with utter contempt.
I feel insulted, firstly that they killed a character I love to appeal to the young male demographic by introducing a ridiculous female character (although I am delighted to say that the reaction of the majority of the young male demographic has been to treat this with the contempt it deserves; and has gone a long way to restoring my faith in that particular group) and secondly that they fail to respond to the people who keep them in employment; ie the people who watch the show and buy the product

  15. Comment by Ellie | 17.Jun.07 @ 10:09 am

Well said Annie! I find it absolutely unbelievable that TPTB feel they can ignore the wishes of the consumers of their product to such a degree. RCC’s comments seem to put us right back where we started - Carson will only be back if they see fit - regardless of consumer opinion. As it was their decision to write him out in the first place I am really disheartened by these comments. When will they realise that they CANNOT ignore us. If Atlantis is picked up for a fifth season and Carson is not included then I will be giving up completely on the Stargate franchise. Usually I buy everything going - DVD’s, mags, books etc. etc. but I am absolutely fed up of being taken for granted and dismissed as unimportant. No show survives without its fan base. Bring Carson back now!

  16. Comment by libby | 17.Jun.07 @ 8:14 pm

dr becket was the goodness of the show. does anyone know why the character was killed off?killing off dr. beckett served no purpose what-so-ever! dr. beckett represented humanity. he was all that is right and good in our world.

  17. Comment by Karen | 18.Jun.07 @ 1:59 pm

I was finally warming up to Atlantis (being a HARD CORE SG1 fan) and they have come very close to loosing me all together by killing off Carson. I agree with the posts above - if they didn’t know how important Carson is to the fanbase, well, THEY DON’T KNOW THEIR FAN BASE! I am hoping that he will have ascended and can retake human form and be back permanently at some crucial point next season. I mean, seriously - how many times did Michael Shanks pull that trick out of the hat??? They had better come up with something along that line to ensure Carson is back……

  18. Comment by Jeane | 19.Jun.07 @ 6:18 pm

Beckett was a great character in the formula for the show. The phony Lt Col Shepperd (with the standard issue Air Force hair gel) is the most tiresome character on the show. With all the times that Daniel came back naked from the ascended side and the other G’ould and Ancient medical technologies, come on. Doc Frazier was enough of a bummer. Bring Beckett back, kill off Tayla or Sheppard.

  19. Comment by Gilbert M. | 22.Jun.07 @ 8:20 pm

Killing Carson on Atlantis was like killing Scotty on Star Trek…simply unthinkable. A key component in the structure and family feel of Atlantis is now gone and frankly I may simply stop watching at this point. I mean what is the point, the whole feel of the show has changed forever. Why this was decided as “working well”, eludes me. Simply put without fans you have no show, listen to your fans and bring Carson back.

  20. Comment by Will | 22.Jun.07 @ 9:04 pm

Look at it this way, how many times have Stargate Characters died and returned.

Jackson has ascended twice now, and died at twice too. O’Neill has died hundreds of times (referring to the Ba’al incident) and Carter has been believed dead as well

Landry died once now, who knows, maybe he will suddenly show up in the control tower naked like Jackson did!

  21. Comment by Ron | 23.Jun.07 @ 7:52 am

I too am appalled at the shows lack of understanding (or apparent caring) of the fan base by killing off Carson. Does anyone know if there was a contract dispute? Did Paul want to leave SGA? I hated it when they changed Rainbow Francks at the end of Season 1. I really liked his character too. We have watched SG1 and SGA from the very beginning of both shows. I’m not looking forward to the new doctor. I’m not in the targeted male demographic, but I can tell you without Weir and Beckett, I may not watch when new shows start up this fall. Even with Amanda Tapping joining, I doubt the chemistry will be there.

  22. Comment by TJuk | 23.Jun.07 @ 8:28 am

We have yet to receive an explanation from the producers but Paul has said in ALL interviews post-’Sunday’s’ airring that it was NOT his choice to leave and he was surprised and disappointed. The partyline is they wanted to ’shake things up’ by killing off a character and needed it to be someone the fans cared about. Apart from that we’re still waiting.

  23. Comment by Lad | 24.Jun.07 @ 7:05 pm

I was very disappointed when I found out that they had killed off Dr. Carson Beckett. To be honest, I very rarely watch science fiction shows but this is one that I did watch on a regular basis. I thought the Beckett character brought a real human element to the show. I realize that shows have to grow and change but his character and also Weir’s had a lot of growth potential that was not explored. I’m very disappointed in the way the show is going with both the Weir and Beckett characters gone, and a lot of the chemistry of the show has been compromised and I’ve already decided to stop my viewership of the show. Too bad, it was one of the best science fiction shows on television.

  24. Comment by Wendy | 26.Jun.07 @ 4:37 pm

Why! Why! Why! I’m fairly new to SG Atlantis, being an die hard almost obsessive SG1 fan, I had no idea this was coming, (don’t get on the web much.) I started watching Atlantis because SG1 was going off the air, I fell in LOVE with the character and they go and kill him off! I literally fell off my couch, landing on the floor with a thump and mouth agape! I kept waiting for the other shoe, the “Gotcha” but no. My favorite character is dead and I just bought the first two seasons on DVD, Paul McGuillion/Carson is the reason I kept watching the show! Frankly I dont care how they bring him back, Just bring him back. I’ll even take a “Dallas” rip off, make it all just a bad dream. Clone him, Ascend him, have Rodney find a mysterious Ancient machine that brings back the dead, I dont care! Just bring him back!…Please…Pretty please?

  25. Comment by Sarah Dial | 13.Jul.07 @ 3:15 am

When I first heard that TPTB had decided to kill off Carson, I though it was a bad joke. When Sunday aired I kept waiting for the shoe to drop. When it finally did I cried like I lost a best friend. I have to say that was the worst cop out death seine I have ever had the displeasure to be subjected to. It’s bad enough they killed him, but to have it be such a pointless, meaningless death WTF? Paul deserved a better send off, ((if he had to be FORCED off the show.)) which he didn’t! Come on! a tumor that explodes? The entire plot of the episode was drivel as SGA episodes go. I will point out that so far Paul’s departure from the show has gone over about as well as Michael Shanks leaving SG1 did a couple years ago. He was back after being gone a season. One would hope it won’t take them that long this time around to cave to the will of the fans. Yes I realize it was Michael’s choice to leave for a year but this time around the writers made that choice for Paul and for us, and I have yet to read one single post that says any fan’s were happy with that choice. No I don’t want to see another ascended to a higher plane plot twist, although I would consider paying money to see Paul naked, this is SG Atlantis not the Full Monty. The writers can only get away with that so many times before it becomes a boring plot device. Do we know what SG1 did with that time traveling puddle jumper? There is an idea McKay decides to swipe the “time jumper” and go save his best friend, for once McKay gets to be the rebel and the hero both usual Sheppard’s job. Lets face it if McKay ever is to have a hope in hell of becoming a human being on the emotional level; he is going to need Carson to show him the ropes. There just is not any one else there that has that ability. Carson exemplifies what it means to be a decent human being. McKay couldn’t have a better teacher or best friend.
So let me see if I get this next season cast change, we get to see McKay continue his unrequited lust for Carter while she fills in for Liz who is off the show for what reason? Oh lets not forget the new T&A addition that got Carson’s job. As a female fan of the show I am feeling very overlooked right now as the writers try to placate the hormones of the “target demographic” So sorry to disappoint, but as a woman I will take Paul’s baby blues over any gratuitous T&A shot of a blond any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

  26. Comment by krismcsherry | 16.Jul.07 @ 1:12 pm

I gave up SGA because of the Carson-killing. I’ve missed it on occasion but haven’t missed wondering which favorite character the writers will wipe out next in order to “shake” things up a bit. They clearly wanted to increase ratings by adding female bods and sex appeal and getting rid of the regulars they considered millstones round their necks: Higginson, who’s too “old”, and McGillion… because they couldn’t have 2 doctors. IMHO, they miscalculated the love/attachment we had for Paul’s character and how the news of the way in which he was summarily dismissed would tick us off. Some fans are sticking around–that’s cool; there are the remaining characters to consider, but for me the writers were too late with too little, even His Most-Revered, RCC. Good luck to Paul on his visits to the show; however bittersweet, and to you fans who love him enough to tolerate the writers and welcome him back by continuing to watch. Enjoy.

  27. Comment by April | 06.Aug.07 @ 7:36 pm

Looks like they pulled a Joss Whedon to me! When Angel started it’s second season, he decided to shake things up by getting rid of Doyle only to later regret the decision. Yes, I still watched as other fans also did and it did’nt really hurt the show.
I have been busy with the Lost fandom and had not been up to date on Stargate news, so I didn’t know anything about Carson dying until I saw it!
I broke down cying as soon as I realized it wasn’t
a joke, right when Rodney was saying if he only had gone fishing…I want him back! If only for Rodney’s sake! I don’t like that they are getting rid of Wier, why are they doing that?! And bringing in
Carter will only make Rodney act stupid and I’m a Rodney girl and I just hate that! I don’t mind if he gets a girlfriend but Sam, c’mon! Why Sam anyway? What about Daniel? He’s a hottie and he was supposed to go there anyway when that stupid Vala kept him from going! And yeah, Danny came back from the dead SO much that it was pitiful! I love Danny but they wore that a bit thin!
In truth, I hated the last season of SG1 and only saw a few of the episodes this year and in my opinion the last episode stunk! I will state this only once people….DANIEL DOES NOT NOW NOR EVER WILL LOVE VALA! Ok, back to Carson, I became a fan of Dr. Beckett’s when he first met up with Ronin and the way he handled his very angry
patient was so kind and gentle and honest! Before that he was just the doctor but now he was in my heart! I was upset by the news of Wier going and I
STILL don’t know why?! But Carson dying was just plain wrong! I think they are gonna bring him back as a replicator and that may make him hard to swallow! Please bring him back as a clone, ascended
or alternate universe version! Actually I read someone’s idea above to have Rodney go back in time to save him, a la Marty McFly saving Doc!
(Just don’t mention that to Rodney cause he hates
BTTF!) BTW, the new doctor is stupid, period.
Nothing special about her! Enough said. BRING BACK CARSON, the other Dr. Beckett I care about!
Right Sam? ^_~ Peace be in the galaxy fools!

  28. Comment by Sarah Dial | 15.Aug.07 @ 12:38 am

That’s what I am saying Rodney needs to pull a Back to the Future and save Carson. Poor Rodney will have to embrace his inner Marty Mcfly. The BTTF references and comic one liner’s would be priceless. It has the potential to be the funniest episode ever. They should let David Hewlett write it, if you have seen “A dog’s breakfast” then you know he has a mean comic streak in him and could really do it justice.

  29. Comment by adagram | 12.Sep.07 @ 12:50 pm

Carson was one of my favorites, and it was such a shock when he got killed, Why??? I love that accent, real or not, and he’s just a really neat character!! I read that Tory Higgonson is leaving the show, is that true?

  30. Comment by Andrina | 05.Oct.07 @ 10:48 am

Now that Amanda Tapping is coming back there won’t be a place for Torri Higginson or even Becket. They made a big mistake in bringing in the Farscape actors in Stargate SG! can’t they see that no matter how loved Amanda Tapping is she will not fit in. Bringg back Paul McGillion. For goodness sake listen to us the viewers for without us you have no show and if you keep ignoring us we will all use our fingers and leave.

  31. Comment by Haggy | 27.Oct.07 @ 10:21 pm

Yep BRING BACK CARSON ok ascension has gotta be out cause well he’s been dead and buried or cremated with his ashes floating around here in bonny Scotland somewhere…..
And um Patrick Swayze has already done the GHOST thing…and lord Rodney gets panicky enough without seeing dead friends. And please for heavens sake no flash backs!! I opt for a replicator version of our loveable doc…one created from the memories of Elizabeth sent back to help her friends ;) at least that way he can stay!

  32. Comment by Misunderstood | 18.Dec.07 @ 2:42 pm

I really hope he’s not a replicator. I mean didn’t the spoilers say he back in the flesh? Replicators aren’t really flesh right?

Also replicators are evil so that would explain the “temporary” return. It better not be temporary. That’s unnecessary teasing right there. Take him back just to bring him back and take him away again.

  33. Comment by Haggis | 14.Mar.08 @ 5:40 pm

So he’s not a replicator he’s a clone and what have they done? They stick him in stasis because he’s dying and he’s not well enough to figure out how to cure himself!!!
Come on! This is very unfair to the fans of Carson. Is this going to be another out of sight out of mind thing? A hey lets leave him deep frozen and see if the fans forget that the character existed because if that’s what the writers are thinking its not going to happen any time soon. Damnit you did that before . Carson was a key figure on atlantis and no one but Rodney even mentioned he had ever been there and that was only a couple of words when they killed off Elizabeth. The fans want the structure that worked so well back. Series 10 of SG1 was dismal, too many changes and the fans just stopped watching. Don’t do the same thing to SGA.
    um…please?
