Stargate Producer Confirms Beckett Departure

19.Nov.06 by astrumporta | Category News | 35 Comments »

Fans who attended this weekend’s Collectormania in Manchester, England are reporting that Stargate producer N. John Smith confirmed that Carson Beckett will disappear in the second half of Atlantis Season 3, although Beckett will not die outright. Paul McGillion will not be a regular in the series in Season 4, although, according to Smith, he will return for future episodes.

Edited to add: Another fan’s interpretation of Smith’s remarks was even less favorable. He/she reported: [He said that from time to time they (meaning himself and the PTB) have to make major decisions about the show and shuffle the deck, play some cards but no one is ever 100% dead on SG1 or SGA!! Carson will disappear by the end of the season but then he went on to say that he may come back as himself or someone else. He then goes on to say that they MAY find a way to bring him back, MAYBE.....]

Of course fans have heard this sort of promise before about characters who are written out. Sadly, often they are only seen once or twice before being forgotten entirely.

What you can do

We hope this news will finally convince fans of Carson and his actor, Paul McGillion, to make their voices heard in Vancouver, so that there is no mistake about what we want: Carson back on the show full-time, where he belongs.

    I’m disgusted! really disgusted!!! I want Flanigan out and Mc Gillion back!

    But Carson dies or just go from Atlantis?

  2. Comment by astrumporta | 20.Nov.06 @ 8:21 am

    It seems he won’t die. Maybe they re-wrote the episode from the earlier version that people hinted about. But Paul won’t be on the show every week. As far as we know, this was not his choice :(

    I’m furious! If they lose Carson, they’ll lose me and several of my friends as fan as well. What can I do to help, just let me know. Hopefully we can make them rethink their decision.

    It’s definitaly not Paul’s choice, he said at SG11 that Atlantis was the only thing he wants to do right now… that plus his mention on stage of tptb listening to the fans just screams out ‘please save me’

    “I’m disgusted! really disgusted!!! I want Flanigan out and Mc Gillion back!”

    I agree with Ripley!! I am… Oh God!!! My dear Dr Beckett!!! There is not any word strong enough to describe what I think, what I feel…!!! Ooohhh!!! Paul!!! My dear Paul! I am so sorry for you!! Except if it is your choice to quit the show (and I would wonder why…)

  6. Comment by Sian | 21.Nov.06 @ 3:58 pm

    No one ever dies on Stargate?? Apparently he’s a producer and has never heard of Janet Frasier or Peter Grodin.

    When Carson goes, I go. I suppose that little “no one ever dies on Atlantis” remark is supposed to entice Carson fans to stick around and hope that he might, maybe possibly, appear in an episode or two during fourth season. Do tptb think we’re really that stupid? This is ::exactly:: why fans will be downloading episodes.

  7. Comment by sueKay | 22.Nov.06 @ 7:49 am

    I can’t believe they’re doing this! It makes no sense whatsoever…

    The writers should try taking some blame and writing for other characters rather than getting rid of characters.

    Why did so few people enjoy s2? Because of cast changes that’s why.

    Sauvez le, c’est un bon personnage celui là, arrêtez de détruire nos séries favorites….
    Tuez plutôt des militaires!
    Vous avez quelque chose contre les docteurs qui jouent dans star gate???

  10. Comment by mary | 25.Nov.06 @ 3:43 pm

    Bastards!!!! How can they get rid of one of the best characters?? He has such great chemistry with everyone and come on that’s the reason we all tune in every week. I was so excited when I read that they were going to focus on team interactions this year, but now they’re getting rid of one of the best members!
    Bastards!!!!

    i not to happy with the choices of the people of stargate… first thing, Carson Beckett AKA Paul Mcgillion did a great job woth the charactor even if the story was not that good i believe he brought most of the writers work to life… Second, if you do bring Jewel Staite in to the site i think it might just Cancel the show like SG1. the think with sg1 the lead man sucks, cuz hes so new and boring, with a little i can do this myself way of going on.. if he was made a newbie n not a leader i think SCIFI wouldn’t have CANCELED the show. third, the show of Atlantis leaves to many things hanging, like Rainbow Sun Francks (“Aiden Ford”) hes okay but the way you took him was not too kool, if you made him a leader of a plant with a reble army to help the fight with the problem wraith that would have been a better begining of a allie on that show… who know maybe there mad sciencist and the Carson is the right hand man on the plant with a over dose of the drug…

  12. Comment by Outlaw98 | 27.Nov.06 @ 2:05 am

    the way Beckett brought the show to life was that the Charactor was nice, funny when facing doom, very optimistic and polite. if you guys killed of Weir i be very happy, cuz she don’t do much, not even her profession like the job on earth…

  13. Comment by Wamp | 27.Nov.06 @ 1:16 pm

    Please Mc Gillion back in next season. PLEAS. PLEAS. PLEAS.

  14. Comment by Jenn | 27.Nov.06 @ 3:59 pm

    Hey Not let Carson Beckett (Paul McGillion) leave yet ; if he did leave there’ll be no fun around atlantis. As for 3 years on show he was fun to be around and I liked him cuz he is more fun person and doctor wise with Rodney McKay. As For Paul McGillion it would be sad not seing him on camera and on tv every fridays next year.

    P.S. Please get him back for next year PLEASE Smile : Winks

  15. Comment by Kiwi | 29.Nov.06 @ 1:46 pm

    If Paul doesn’t wish to leave, then why kill him off? I say they don’t bring on Kaylee from Firefly and keep Beckett! Beckett is one of my favorite characters; he is the moral voice of the group. He’s so nice and kind and sweet and funny. He also has great chemistry with everyone, but espically McKay. He can always bring down McKay a peg, and I think that’s why McKay is becomming more human and less snooty. If Paul goes, the show goes. Period. It definitly will not be the same, and I know me and my friends, and alot of other fans, will quit watching if this happens. TPTB, u hear our cries, but it seems u aren’t LISTENING! We DON’T want Carson gone! Plus, it’s really starting to annoy me that other ppl from failed sci-fi shows are jumping the SG bandwagon. Now, I don’t mind Vala, in fact, I really like her! It’s Mitchel I find no use for. So stop replacing our excellent cast members with ppl from failed sci-fi shows! There’s a reason they failed! Now, I’m not saying the person who plays Kaylee is a bad actress, I loved Firefly and Kaylee, it’s just that they have no place in SG-1 or SGA. Please, don’t kill off a beloved character, espically since he doesn’t want to leave.

  16. Comment by Katie | 02.Dec.06 @ 4:35 am

    Garr I’m so mad! Carson’s one of the reasons I watch SGA! If Paul doesn’t want to leave then why kill him off? He’s still a good part of the show. I don’t know much about Kaylee, but with her going on the show and more SG1 main characters making guest appearances, I’m thinking there might not be enough spotlight to shine on the main characters of SGA. It’s only season 3 and there’s still a lot about the characters we dont know. They should put their attention to and focus on what they have now!

  17. Comment by JEN | 02.Dec.06 @ 10:50 am

    I really don’t think they should get rid of Carson. A little bit of hope though . . . they got rid of DANIEL JACKSON for a season, replace him with Jonas, then brought him back. (Of course, then they got rid of Jonas, which was really stupid, cause he was really hot. Plus a new allie. Plus, had good chemistry witht he SG1 team. Ah, well.) And they KILLED Daniel. They aren’t planning to kill off Carson (as far as I understand, anyway — they are sending him back to Earth) Hopefully, we can get Carson back at the beginning of Season Four. Please?

  18. Comment by Corey | 04.Dec.06 @ 8:15 am

    I do not like this move one bit. it is almost like taking spock out of star trek.

  19. Comment by JEN | 07.Dec.06 @ 8:13 pm

    Try McCoy. Beckett is the Dr. McCoy of Atlantis. Can you imagine StarTrek without Bones?

    There is no way they can make the show function without Carson in it. For one thing, Rodney would go completely batty. For another, Carson is really the only one still concerned with the Ethics of what they are doing in the Pegasus Galaxy. He gives the show the moral and ethical grounding that they need to have, especially given the way things seem to be progressing. We need MORE of Carson, not LESS!

  20. Comment by Lorrie Ellis | 16.Jan.07 @ 9:39 am

    Stargate Atlantis is one of my all time favorite Sci-Fi shows and I would very much hate to see the departure of Dr. Carson Beckett (McGillion). I love his Scottish banner with all of the other characters, but especially McKay and Shepperd.

    I have also heard that Torri Higginson might be listed as only a recurring role in the 4th season. I hope this is not true. These characters have become a tight knit familiy of sorts and unless the actors themselves have decided to leave the series, I would hope that the writers and producers would re-think their decisions.

    I have also heard through the grapevine that Amanda Tapping (Carter) will be joining the cast as a possible full-time character on the 4th season. I really like Carter, but not if Weir has to be booted to make room for her, or any other character for that matter.

    PLEASE RE-THINK YOUR DECISIONS!!! WEIR & BECKETT NEED TO STAY IN THE PEGUSUS GALAXY!!!!

    Just watched the episode where he dies…

    Its the end for him

  22. Comment by Bud_AV | 16.Jan.07 @ 6:05 pm

    Well, I didn’t know this was coming, so I was shocked when I saw the relivant episode. Have the Star Gate writers have something against doctors?! Friaser and Beckett both end up going so abruptly! GAH!

  23. Comment by Browchay | 17.Jan.07 @ 4:12 am

    To be fair I’m not overly sorry to see him go. Its more realistic to have a ‘main’character get killed once in a while. I mean how long can everyone always survive in these life and death situations without getting hurt / killed.

    And lets face it .. if he’d just done what he was told he’d still be alive ! Let that be a lesson to you kids out there… do as you are told and survive !! ;-)

  24. Comment by razz | 17.Jan.07 @ 4:15 pm

    Wtf! This sucks, keep him!

    void OnCharacterDeath(Character* character)
    {
    if (character == Characters::Carson)
    {
    Characters::McKay->FindWayToRessurect(character);
    }
    }

    All hope lies with almighty McKay.

  25. Comment by Jeff | 23.Jan.07 @ 9:49 pm

    This blows, Carson was my favorite character.

  26. Comment by Jan van Bergen | 26.Jan.07 @ 12:51 am

    I am truly shocked! Carson must stay! Have the writers gone crazy by writing him out of the story?

    WRITE BECKETT BECK!!

    Writing Carson out has made your series very vulnerable!

  27. Comment by Aleks | 31.Jan.07 @ 8:33 pm

    Wait, i just saw 2 episodes after he died, and guess what, he is there again! WTF? So, is he dead or alive? In sunday he died, but then in the new one with the underwater station, he was still there. Or the one fore that. I cant remember right now. But, what is going on?

  28. Comment by CHANCE Titor /Sundance | 04.Feb.07 @ 8:37 pm

    CARSON is NOT (!!!!!!) death ….He is pure energy ….

    and will return as ………rofl……..

    a Wraith (What a surprise !!!! )

    How do I know that ??

    Well .. I”m from (a possible) future ….

  29. Comment by Baloo | 11.Feb.07 @ 6:58 am

    I am truly saddened by his departure, as grand a finale as it was.
    The biggest reason I liked SGA was the fact it had such a huge family.
    Beckett truly was the moral fibre of the cast, if anything, he was the most realistic human of the bunch.
    I wonder if the writers have been complaining that it’s too hard to write episodes for so many characters. If so, then this shows a weak link that should be rectified.
    Are we now moving to a show which will only concentrate on the main SG team?
    Or is it because those in power are worried that “us hare regalar fohlks” might watch less of the show “becuz its soh cohmplakaytud” for our little viewer minds.

    Here’s hoping for a Daniel Jackson moment eh?! Cheers!

  30. Comment by Mrs.C | 19.Feb.07 @ 5:46 pm

    i just watched it and i am very very sad he helped make the show its going to be so depressing watching it now bring him back i cried when it happend who ever wrote him off made a bad choice unless its a twist and he comes back somehow. JUST BRING HIM BACK

  31. Comment by Someguy | 19.Feb.07 @ 5:58 pm

    Dr. Beckett has accended for his actions. That’s why they showed a clip of him and Rodney standing together talking. He’ll end up probably de-accending in a future eposide.

  32. Comment by Casey | 19.Feb.07 @ 7:25 pm

    I am truly saddened and angered by the decision to eliminate the character of Dr. Carson Beckett. How can the writers expect to retain viewer loyalty in this manner? At this point I have lost interest in watching the program on a regular basis and only the return of Dr. Beckett would rekindle my interest!

  33. Comment by Dan | 02.Mar.07 @ 11:38 am

    What’s really terrible is the manner in which they killed him off. C’MON, an explosive tumor???? I thoroughly enjoy cheesy scifi and am willing to suspend belief, but this is a quality series and that’s just baaaad writing…He cheated death on so many previous occasions only to be taken out by a chunk of medical waste?! They did a poor job leading up to it also with the arguments about Carson sealing off that level of the tower to try to save the tech from certain death. I think the time spent arguing would probably have been enough for him to get away from the flesh fireball that surrounded him at the end. A better end might have been to just let him get lost on an episode, like Ford earlier in the series, where we have no real idea what happened to him but always hope he’ll pop up again in the future.

  34. Comment by michael | 17.Jun.07 @ 4:16 am

    just saw the episode off my dvr
    what a bummer
    he was such a beloved character, unassuming, caring compassionate, and a darn goood doc. I actually shed a tear. The episode the following week also just seen off my dvr has no mention of beckett at all!!! at least when ford disappeared, shepard went looking for him and the team was concerned about him. beckett is gone and not a word.

    hopefully the writers will get this figured out?
