Thanks to the more than 300 of you who responded to our first survey on Carson Beckett and his fate. The results are in…
We had 317 unique respondents to our Carson Beckett survey. For the few cases of duplicate email addresses, only the last submittal was kept. Of those 317 responses, 265 or 84% were women. The respondent age ranges were distributed nearly evenly from 18 through 54 years of age, with 10% aged 17 or below and 1% aged 55 or older.
Nearly 47% of respondents “have read all the rumors and aren’t sure what to believe” as far as the fate of Carson. Only 13% believe Carson will be killed off. These data reflect fan uncertainty in the face of vague public information, as well as hints that fans have it wrong from sources such as David Hewlett’s blog.
When asked to imagine for a moment that Carson will be killed, a decisive 72% of respondents said losing Carson would be unacceptable to them no matter how good the episode is. Only 3.5% will not mind losing Carson no matter the circumstances, and 16% predict they will accept his death if the episode is done well.
As far as how losing Carson will affect their Atlantis viewing habits, 53% predict they will either stop watching all or new episodes (13%) or be less committed to watching (40%) Atlantis than they are now. This is the crucial figure for “the powers that be” of Atlantis to take note of: Carson’s death will cost viewers.
As to the general question of how Stargate has handled character death in the past, a perhaps surprising 56% say it’s been handled well most or nearly all of the time, while 38% feel it’s been done not very well or horribly. In spite of this general perception, as an unrealized event, the prospect of Carson’s death is unacceptable to the vast majority.
We’d like to thank everyone who participated in the survey. We will make sure the producers of Atlantis are made aware of the results and the strong support the Carson Beckett character enjoys in fandom. And, we will conduct another survey if necessary once we know Carson’s fate for certain.
We invite you to view all the survey results, including some in graphical form, on this web page.
Please pass the word on the survey to all of your on-line communities!
I agree with Trialia’s comment. I am among the many that likes Beckett. He is a “likeable” character but honestly, he really don’t have much to offer the show story wise.
I hate to see him leave but at the same token, I understand TPTB’s decision to possibly off this character. He was on borrowed time anyways, he wasn’t a part of the original cast in the begininning.
He WAS a part of the main cast from DAY 1. Whether he be on the credits or not he was one of the very first characters we see on screen, he was the actor was the FIRST to be cast and TPTB admitted themselves they would have made him a regular from day 1 and it felt like it (hence the cast shots) it was only technicalities which prevented it and that coupled with the fan response its what made it offical for season 2. They even went back after 4-5 eps to shoot MORE material to add MORE Beckett into the earlier eps.
So please, get your facts straight before posting. Also I would appreciate it if you refrain from posting such comments, this is a site for support for the character not to come and be childish with pointless critisum and bitchy comments.
Thanks, TJ. I also wanted to say any further discussion of the character should be done on our forum, not here in comments on a post about the survey results. In any case, I’m sure TPTB can make their own judgments about the validity of our survey without fans’ advice.
I won’t approve further comments here unless they are relevant to the post topic.
Hi
Although at first I wanted convinced about Dr Beckett since watching this latest season he’s really coming into his own.
So I think it would be a real waste to kill him off
Plus I love Mr McG
I love the character of Carson Beckett. I don’t want to see Carson go, and this is coming from a major Firefly fan whose fave Firefly character is Kaylee (Jewel Staite’s role). I’d love to see Jewel on SGA again, but not at the expense of Carson, (or Rodney and John). When TPTB drop popular characters and add new or not as popular characters they are taking a risk. The only time SG1 did that where I wasn’t too disappointed was when Michael Shanks left the show for 1 season. While I missed Daniel, I really grew to like the character of Jonas and still enjoyed the show. The last few seasons I just haven’t enjoyed SG1 all that much. It just doesn’t seem like SG1 to me anymore, and I’d hate to see that happen to SGA. I already got a small sense of that last season with the addition of Mitch Pilleggi and frequent contact w/earth.
As with everyone except Trialla and Madgy, I dearly love the character of Carson Beckett and, despite my great liking for John, Rodney and, especially Radek, I would lose a great deal of interest in the show if we were to lose Carson…..especailly if they were to kill him off! We DON’T need a replacement FEMALE doctor! The MALE doctor we have is plenty! The heart and soul of Atlantis if you will who agonizes over everything he does! The humanity would be gone! The heart and sould would be gone!
I love Carson Beckett and I love Paul McGillion! Sweet guys that they BOTH are!
Normaly I’m all for female equality but with SGA as a spin off from SG-1 it was refreshing to have a male doctor. Having a man play the kind, sympathetic, caring role that Carson embodied went against typical male sterotypes. It was a step forward.
I bear no grudge to McGillion’s replacement, I’m sure she’ll do a fantastic job, unfortunately she is female and we need a caring male character within the show. We’re losing a big part of the show by losing Carson. Not only that but - yet another American! So much for the idea of a multi-national crew. How long until we need a Save Radek Zelenka site?
I for one say stick with diversity, stick with forward thinking. The character of Carson Beckett embodies both these much needed things.
He became an *official* main cast member due to fan response. You just need to look at his cast video to see how loved he is as a character as well as a cast member. Whoever made the decision to axe him has no clue what they’re doing to the show.
It’s Daniel Jackson all over again and look how that turned out? Lets not all lose hope just yet.
I have been a fan of stargate atlantis since it came out three years of go it replaced my favorite show stargate sg1 once Oneal left the show. I will be very upset if the kill Dr. Carson Beckett I think he is a vital part of the show and gives it as much and is need as much as rodeny he Dr. Carson Beckett is a refreshing character to watch. I do believe if you kill him off i will be less lilkley to watch the show as much.
I just wonder how many people are really going to write / Call , MGM and the other TPTB , i know alot that will come to these types of websites , say there few words of wisdom , and then not pick up pen to paper , and just like voting not do anything , and then complain that no one listened in the end , the main reason they think is that someone else will do it , and your vote/voice/letter doesnt count 300 women are not going to chnage anything 1/3rd of the complete SGA Viewing numbers might , its simple rnough to get CB back its going to take ‘MUCH” more than what we are doing..
DO NOT KILL CARSON…….PLEASE
just like carsons character, i,m scottish and i haven’t a clue what they were thinking when they decided to kill carson. he is a main character, he is funny and he deserves the same respect as any other main character.
OMG just saw Sunday in Ireland there is no way that he is dead. At the end on the show he was talking to McKay i think that he Ascended just like Daniel in SG1 they cant kill him off and must bring him back to life. just wondering if he is going to turn up naked on another planet or in some part of Atlantis.
very interesting survey. good job! you should make another one to collect every one’s reaction to Carson’s death. I just hope more people will respond.
keep up the good work, we all want Carson back!!
On SG1, Janet Fraiser was my favorite character. And now Carson? Jeez…what do TPTB have against MDs?
I just saw the episode that killed off Carson Beckett and I really don’t care if I ever see another SGA episode again, and I’ve watched both SG-1 and Atlantis faithfully, own all the DVDs that are released to date and have watched them all again in order.
Everything that can be said about why it was a bad choice to kill off the character has been said, so I won’t get into all that again inspite of my strong feelings over losing him in the show.
After reading everything that I could about it though, including the lack of any reasoning for killing off the character, I’m feeling very manipulated right now. Yes, this is a repeat of Michael Shanks and they all know how that turned out. Free publicity for the show being at the top of that situation.
So hmm…. few years later they do it again to the Stargate fans. Yet pretty much from the start they seemed willing to entertain the idea of him returning if they heard enough from the fan base, if the petition for his return got on a national US TV show…
Honestly, this all reeks of us being played to get Stargate Atlantis more free publicity with the uproar his being killed off has caused. Think about it.
Yes, I know he’s returning for 2, maybe 3, episodes at the end of Season 4, and then the door is open for Season 5. It still smells rotten in Denmark to me though and I’m not a happy fan at all about it.
I really loathe the writers for killing Carson, but at the same time, I can’t be mad at them. They did it so tastefully, and I think they really laid the character to rest well. And if it had been any other, I would have been happy with it, but he was the character I most identified with and am completely heart-broken it had to be Carson. I am looking forward to seeing Carson again in season 4, but if he is not a returning character in season 5, I’m sad to say I’ll have to discontinue the series, but I wish Star Gate Atlantis all the luck in the World and I hope that they continue to be a success.
Hopefully they do put Carson back in the show. And I hope to continue watching Atlantis with Carson in tow.
