David Hewlett On Fan Surprises

17.Oct.06 by astrumporta | Category News |

David Hewlett was interviewed here at SG1Archive.com on October 6. He had this to say about the “rumors” concerning Carson:

Linz & Abeey: Well, there are terrible rumors about Dr. Beckett going around. In fact there is a savecarsonbeckett.com already.

DH: I actually saw that. That is of course one of the things I’m not allowed to talk about. I think that there are a few rumors going on right now and that you guys are going to be very very surprised when you get the truth.

L: Good surprise or bad surprise?

DH: That is up to the fans. I think everyone will be very very surprised with how everything works out.

So once again, not much to go on from David, as he throws the ball in fans’ court as to how we’ll react to the surprises. We’re pleased he’s visited this site. We hope he knows the purpose of our campaign is to support his friend Paul the only way we can, by speaking out.

    Okay, looking at this rationally…

    1. If Carson’s not going to die, why not just come straight out and deny the rumour?
    2. Technically, Janet’s death was also being touted as a “surprise”, right up until it aired, despite the rumours going around. And THAT was never out and out denied either.
    3. Why have TPTB also declined completely to comment on the situation? Surely, if they want SO much to put a lid on this, why not just deny it?

This policy of non-denial speaks volumes.

    Just my two cents.

I think David doesn’t really say anything either way except to confirm there are things coming up that will ’suprise’ us. He didn’t answer the ‘good or bad’ question and looking at his comments, especially where he says “I’m not allowed to tell you” I think thats probably because those ‘events’ illuded to will have a powerful effect. What has a bigger effect then the loss of a character? And what, in Stargate’s history has ever been so careful concealed and played off then the death of a popular character? They like shock factor, it has a big impact, unfortunately it never seems to have a lasting one unless its negative, which makes it all pointless. Which is EXACTLY what will happen IF they kill of Carson. It will ultimately be pointless and a waste of the work contributed by the actor and the important contribution the character has made to the show.

Hum!!! Well… If Carson is not going to die (which I hope), Maybe a MAIN character does… Mmmm Sheppard??? Weir??? Teyla (NOOOO!!!!) ? Ronon? Or… Aiden Ford???

I’d prefer Sheppard. It is the less interesting character.

Well, no answer is an answer :)
At the moment, David’s comment has one certain effect to me: If I EVER GET MY HANDS ON THE MAN, I will grab him when he is hungry, stick him on a wall with duct tape and savour a big chocolate bar piece by piece rigth in front of him! And I will really enjoy that *evilgrin*

Just to add something: Isn’t it a little bit strange that David is so much in “I am not allowed to tell you” but on the first hand, he and Torri told the fans on convetions and in interviews about “horrible” and “surprising” things that go to happen. I mean, why bring rumors around in the first place??? A little bit to much on purpose for me…

I don’t know about everyone else but it’s starting to feel the same way it did when Mallozzi had a big net presence. I think David’s a fantastic actor and McKay is joint best character in SGA (along with Carson of course) but I wish tptb and now the actors would stop toying with the audience. That is how fandoms become divided, meddling by higher powers that know more than we do and have power that we don’t.

The writers have no clue how to execute character death and maintain its effects. As far as I’m aware MS and RDA made it clear before the departure they wanted to leave but Teryl and Paul seemed to have that decision forced on them. I just hope Carson’s death isn’t orchestrated to get Weir a cheap hug from Sheppard or used as a red herring to make you think someone more important (in whose eyes) has died instead.

I admit I’d be devastated if it seemed Weir had been killed but it turned out to be Carson, I’d have went from delighted to despondent.
