We think so, yes. We believe that the character Dr. Carson Beckett will be killed off in Season 3 of Stargate Atlantis. There are many converging pieces of information that lead to this conclusion. In fact, it would be something like “denial” to not accept this fact given what’s been said lately.
There have been several direct statements that something big and horrible will happen this season on Atlantis:
Torri Higginson, iF Magazine interview, 11 August 2006:
I am so tempted to tell you things that I shouldn’t. I’m a tell all or tell nothing girl. Something crazy happens second half of season three, that it will blow people’s minds. It is so crazy and so unexpected, and there will be uproar and the internet will be on fire.
David Hewlett, his blog, 16 August, 2006:
I really think that you are going to get a kick out of what we’ve been up to up here in Atlantis…although I have to tell you all…there have been some pretty shocking developments on the story front…and some huge changes on the horizon…I can say no more…but be warned!
David Hewlett, his blog, 18 August, 2006:
Big 200th SG1 party tonight…may even have to break out the suit I’ve been given from an upcoming Atlantis episode…an episode that you are going to completely freak out about…nuff said! (I really am evil!)
Torri Higginson, interview with Gateworld, posted August 2006:
GW: Great. What about the most dreadful?
TH: You know what, you’re going to have to ask me that when the season is aired. I kind of can’t answer that. There has been some really awful stuff that happened, and I cannot divulge it at all.
GW: That made it on screen?
TH: Yeah. So ask me that when the season is almost over. I will talk about that with you again.
GW: OK, OK. Don’t scare us, Torri!
TH: Oh, a little bit of fear’s alright.
Report from JewelStaite.net, 19 September 2006:
Some visitors may know that I attended last weekend’s Serenity Cubed convention, which Jewel attended and where I gave her the fan scrapbook. I’ll be posting a full report on that very soon. But first I thought I’d inform you of some news on the work front for Jewel. In one of the guest talks she informed the fans that she has been offered a role on Stargate Atlantis, as a doctor. She hasn’t accepted the role yet, as she doesn’t know what the role is and what it involves. But it could be on the books. I’ll keep you informed or any more information on this which I receive.
Also, at a recent convention Torri Higginson and Rachel Lutrell refused to say whether an Atlantis character is going to die this year. An unconfirmed report is floating around of an extra on the set who was there during filming of a funeral around a coffin covered in a Scottish flag. This would match with David’s mention of having to wear a suit in an upcoming episode.
Our attempts to ask behind-the-scenes contacts if Carson is going to die have resulted in no response, when a denial would have been easy to provide.
Looking back at losing Janet Fraiser in Stargate SG-1′s Season 7 episode “Heroes,” events are repeating themselves in an almost eerie way. No one is confirming anything, but it’s clear someone is going to die. Jewel’s new job offer seems to point more to Carson being the unlucky character than anyone else. The fact that few fans agreed Janet’s death was worth the “drama” of “Heroes” seems to have been a wasted lesson on the producer who runs Atlantis, Brad Wright.
As far as we know, Paul McGillion did not ask to be written out. To the contrary, in public statements he has always been thrilled to be working on the show and grateful for the fan response that made him a cast regular. Our hearts go out to Paul for this treatment of his character, and to his cast-mates who seem so happy to work alongside him.
We’re not here to convince fellow fans that Carson Beckett is a beloved character whose loss will further erode fan support for the show and the franchise. Either you care enough about Carson to act, or you don’t. If you do, we ask you to join us, to make your voice heard in Vancouver. We want to make it clear our loyalty to the creators of Stargate is shredded enough without losing a favorite character to another misguided attempt at creativity, in an episode that lasts 42 minutes with repercussions that last forever.
We’re here to do whatever we can, and to help fans have their say. Only a large and rapid response has a chance of turning this decision around and bringing Carson back for Season 4. We know from other campaigns that letters to the powers that be have more impact than anything else, which is why we provide the addresses and a letter-sending service as well.
Please join us! If you have a bit of time to help, please join the Yahoo! group at the join link above. We’ll coordinate our efforts from there.
carson has the best accent and he is the glue that holds everyone together!!! if any one of the characters dies the whole show will die with it! its like jenga.. you can’t just go pulling random peices out!!! maybe zelenka but not carson!!!
When Carson will die, Atlantis lost one of his main characters. He’s funny, cool and his accent ist great. For me he is a very important person in Atlantis and when he will die…. NO! He Musn’t die!!!!!
I don’t want Carson dying! If Carson dies, I’ll boycott the show! producers made huge mistakes like killing off Janet Frasier, firing Jonas Quinn or kikking off Peter Grodin. This one is another one.
Carson is the character that brings the most of humanity in the show, and Mc Kay without Beckett it’s like Riggs without Murtaugh or Laurel without Hardy.
Paul Mc Gillion is a very talented actor which still deserves his place in Atlantis. Moreover, Beckett is the nicest character of the show. Without Carson, no ATA gene, no help for using ancients device.
Killing off Carson could ruin the show since his character has a great rapport with the other characters and brings a sense of humility and humour to the show (as Frasier did for SG1 and things only went downhill there when she left). SGA needs their doc.
Terrible news. We named our son Carson after watching Season One. If the character were to die, just think of the shock my son will have…!
Forgive me for playing the devil’s advocate here, but how do we know Jewel Staite isn’t going to be replacing Heightmeyer? And since he’s already out of the show (basically), how do we know it isn’t Ford who eventually gets killed this year?
Just asking…
I can’t believe they’re going to kill off Carson! He was the only reason I watched the show. Obviously, tptb didn’t learn from their mistake in killing off Janet Frasier. I’ll not watch the show if they proceed with this. I think SciFi is going the way of UPN. hmmm, wasn’t Bonnie Hammer head of UPN when it went belly up?
I hope that the rumors are not true!
Carson is a great character who is vital as he questions the morality of the actions he takes as well as the others.
Not only that he is one of the most down to Earth characters, not the superhero or the super genius. He’s just a very clever man in a strange place trying to do his job. That would be the worst thing to lose Carson because he is like the bridge between the viewers and Atlantis.
I’d rather they killed off Sheppard, awful as that would be. We already lost Aiden (who at least can show up in future episodes since he isn’t dead), why would do they have to pick on the Scott? In a show with an ensemble cast, you can’t pull out one of the supports. Carson’s function is to be the heartor the nurturer, the person who isn’t a soldier and isn’t really sure he wants to be there, but takes care of everyone else, even though he is scared silly sometimes. McKay isn’t a soldier but is so excited by all the new ‘toys’, he doesn’t let the fear stop him. Killing our doctor would leave a huge hole in the fabric of our story that no one could replace — just as no one could replace Daniel Jackson. My only hope in this is that it is some sort of plot device, that Carson ‘dies’ (or everyone thinks he has) but it turns out later that they were wrong, that he is still alive. Plenty of precedent for that on SG1, too.
he is oine the best actors on the show i think i mean who did not love the duet episode with him in it was so funny and he was the one that made it so funny SAVE CARSON WE ALL LOVE HIM
It would be a tragedy for the show if Carson were lost. He provides the humanity and friendship balance, particularly for the manic McKay.
He is exactly what Janet was in SG1, the one safe character whom audiences knew could reflect our sorrow and our vulnerability when crazy and unbelievable things are happening in the Stargate Universe.
Without him Stargate Atlantis risks losing its quite, subtle, emotional centre which balances the shoot ‘em up, boys with toys nature of a typical SciFi show.
As a character, he doesn’t have to do much, he just has to be there, for us.
Carson is my favorite character. Killing off will be a big mistake. Why doesn’t Sci-Fi Channel off some of their overpaid executives and then redirect their salaries to the show.
It is important to keep things fresh and shocking in the world of television. Killing off characters is an important piece to the puzzle of making great television. However, I have to agree that killing of Carson is a bad move, everyone likes him to much. Now, there is one character that would be GREAT to kill off, Weir. The only thing that keeps my girlfriend and myself from watching the show religiously is Torri Higginson. In fact she has become so unbearable that my girlfriend refuses to watch the show unless there is nothing else on. So I say someone should start a KillDrWeir.com site and get rid of thorn in the shows paw. Just admit that here annoying facial mannerisms, head nods and rediculous portrayal of a “benevolent” observer are too much to handle. Damn she bugs me.
Bottom line – characters die sometimes. But Beckett is the only “shining good guy” on the Atlantis expedition. Ford is “gone”, Shepphard, Wier and the rest are open to doing nasty things if the end justifies the means (remember “Steve”?)
Beckett is the one who is always “fighting to do the right thing at all costs”, much the way Daniel Jackson does on SG1. If he is lost from the show, it loses any hope of the “morality battles” that take place whenever a big decision comes up. The whole concept of “we could do this, but does it make us any better than the Goa’uld/Wraith/Ori?” sentiment is vital to a show like Stargate.
Every sci-fi show needs a consummate “voice of ethics” who gets loudest when the situation gets dire – Star Trek had guys like McCoy and Picard. Quantum Leap had Sam (those Becketts raise some honorable kids!), the list goes on and on. Seems the medical doctors and their Hippocratic oaths make for the best “white knights” – why kill the only one Atlantis has?
Oh my goodness, not Carson. He is truly the best soul in Atlantis and without him and the interaction with the McKay Character there would not be so much fun in the future.
I never was a fan of the “Daniel Jackson Dying again” Parts and when Janet died I was sad too.
But I hope that this is just a rumor and the producers (or who else) sat it of to build tenison and keep the people watching.
Me not, because Carsons Character is one of the two reasons I love Atlantis.
Carson Forever !!!
Riddle me this, folks!
Who’s the warmest, sweetest person in SGA?
Which character has the most enjoyable and emotionally gratifying scenes?
And who can generate some good chemistry (with Weir) with something as simple as a side-ways glance?
Dr. Carson Beckett. That’s who. So grow a pair and save Carson from that pearly gate in the sky, SGA writers. Bring him back ASAP. And if you can’t turn back time, use your imagination and steal another version from a parallel universe. A Dr. Beckett with all the added helpings of emotional responsibility and need to save lives. A dude just as soft and kind as the original. Only this time, make him bold enough to own up to his attraction to Weir.
I dunno, I don’t really see any ‘connection’ between the something awful happening and this specific character being written out.
I think you folks are jumping to conclusions.
OH STOP IT, STOP IT, ALL OF YOU!!!
Sorry about the little outburst there… but have I gotten your attention now? Good.
First of all, just because Janet Frasier was a doctor and she got killed DOES NOT AUTOMATICALLY MEAN that Carson Beckett will get killed off just because he’s a doctor too! Trust me, I like Carson too. Granted, the Atlantis series sometimes mimics the SG-1 series in things like plot lines or little details here and there, but don’t go jumping the gun just yet!
I’ll also grant you that Carson shares some attributes with Daniel and Janet, but that doesn’t automatically mean that he’d go through the same sorts of things as them. Just because some characters from both series share some attributes with each other (like Mitchell and Sheppard, for example)… you see the point I’m trying to make here?
There’s also the “unconfirmed report” about the coffin with the Scottish flag on it. How do you know it’s not just a wild rumor which someone made up to get the fans all riled up over nothing? But let’s assume for one moment that there IS something like that coming up. What are the possibilities?
1. It’s another Scottish character who got killed.
2. Maybe it’s for Carson, BUT he’s not really dead! Anyone else recall the SG-1 episode “Fire and Water”, where the SGC did a memorial service for Daniel because they thought he was dead but he wasn’t?
3. Maybe Carson DOES die, but he Ascends. Hey, who knows? The writers of both “Stargate” series have thrown some pretty wild things at us before.
Besides, not only could this rumor be false, but maybe it was deliberately planted by the cast and crew of Atlantis to throw us off from predicting something else. So, while you’re all going completely crazy over this, they’re probably snickering at their computers as they’re watching this, for all we know.
While in that vein, I’d like to note that it would be rather unlike the people behind both/either “Stargate” series to just kill off a beloved character just to aggravate and sadden the fans. Not only do they not do that… but I’m sure they remember the reaction to Janet Frasier’s demise quite vividly.
And as for these “Save Whatever” campaigns in general… sometimes they work, sometimes they don’t.
I’m sorry if anyone finds this offensive, but trust me, if I wanted to be offensive, you could tell.
Sincerely,
Quillian
Gee, I hope those of you calling us whackos will come back and apologize after “Sunday” airs
I agree with other fans. I am French and the fans of Atlantis adores Carson!! Why make it die? We adore him in France!! Live Carson, the heart of Atlantis!
They can’t kill him! They killed Janet Frasier in SG-1, what do they have against CMOs!!!! They can’t kill him, I don’t care if it’s ‘just a show’ the acting is so brilliant, that it seems almost real! If they get rid of him (or already have) there is going to be a heck of a lot of fire!
As Elisabeth, i am a french fan of Paul.
I was at Wolf SG11 this week end, and he is a great actor and a good man!!!! I want him back !
When Paul will go, a good actor and fantastic person will be going. I can’t live without the wonderful dr Beckett in Stargate Atlantis, I met Paul on 2 conventions and he’s lovely and certainly deserve the part. He grew so much, why cut him down? Please, don’t let Beckett dye!
Carson Beckett will die?
But why? He can’t die.
He’s THE MAN.
One of the bests carachters.
Paul Mcgillion is a very very good actor, he doesn’t deserve this.
Please don’t kill Becktt.
Please save Carson. And keep all main characters you started with on SGA. Don’t “jump the shark” and mess up the good chemistry you have going that won you all the awards!
I’m hoping that the producers arn’t trying to darken
up SG-Atlantis by ripping the heart out of the series
and turn it into a BSG clone. One BSG is enough.
Paul McGillion is too good to waste and the series
needs him. A warning to the producers something
new and completely different will do you no good
if you lose the audience in the process. I believe they
should take another look at the direction the show
is going. As a carpenter friend told me measure twice
and cut once. Screw something up and it may not be
possible to correct.
Leave the character of Dr. Beckett alone. It would be
as if you killed Dr. McCoy on the original Star Trek.
I have a better idea lets hold a raffle with a tractor
as first prize so the producers can pull their heads
out of their collective asses.
It happened im crying ![]()
CARSON RULES WHY DID THEY DO THIS WHY!
Bring back Doctor Carson Beckett it might be nice to use that sarcofficus that they use on Star gate SG 1 have the gaould bring him back becaise the wraith plans to attack them and they need Carsons formula to fight them off.
It is not right they cut bekkett, ronin, tayla, or weir would have been better.
I am a fan of all 10 seasons of sg-1 and am working hard to get into atlantis more, but Beckett was the wrong character to cut
